The Pomodoro Technique is a popular method for improving productivity and promoting effective time management. Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, this simple yet powerful approach has proven useful for people in all industries and disciplines.

What is the Pomodoro technique?

The Pomodoro technique is named after the Italian word for “tomato” and was named after the traditional kitchen clocks that reminded Cirillo of the shape of a tomato. The essence of this technique is to divide working time into short, focused intervals, called “Pomodoros”, separated by short breaks.

  3. Take a short break: When the Pomodoro is finished, take a short break of 5 minutes. Use this time to stretch, take a short breath or take a quick walk.
  4. Repeat the process: After each completed Pomodoro, repeat the cycle. Work for another 25 minutes, followed by a 5-minute break.
  5. Take longer breaks: After completing four Pomodoros, take a longer break of 15-30 minutes. Use this time to recharge and reflect on your work.

Example of the Pomodoro technique in practice:

Let’s say you have an important task ahead of you, namely preparing a presentation for an upcoming customer meeting.

  1. You start the Pomodoro session and work continuously on the presentation for 25 minutes. You focus fully on collecting data, preparing slides and formulating your speech.
  2. When the timer sounds, you take a short 5-minute break. You get up from your seat, stretch and take a few deep breaths to refresh your mind.
  3. After the break, start a new Pomodoro session and continue fine-tuning your presentation for the next 25 minutes.
  4. After four Pomodoro sessions (approximately 2 hours), you take a longer break of 15-30 minutes. You use this time to take a stroll outside and recharge your energy.

By repeating this process, you can maintain a high level of productivity and concentration over time.
